A New Way!

A Revolutionary New Way of Treating Musculoskeletal Problems.

Traditional treatment for many tendon, ligament, and joint problems may not be the best way to treat these problems.  It’s time to rethink our treatment of these problems, and use our own body to help heal itself.  The way it was meant to.

A new way of treating musculoskeletal injuries and problems is now available.  Regenerative Medicine uses revolutionary techniques and procedures that stimulate your own body to heal itself.  No foreign or artificial products are needed.  These procedures help individuals to overcome common injuries and degenerative conditions, allowing them to achieve their personal goals.

These advanced non-surgical procedures harness a patient’s own blood platelets and stem cells to help heal damaged tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.  These techniques also help control inflammationa and pain.  Click here to see some common problems that can be treated with PRP.

The Orthopedic Regenerative Medicine and Joint Preservation Center of Santa Rosa makes these game-changing and revolutionary procedures and techniques available to patients.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cells

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a regenerative injection treatment that stimulates the body to repair itself using a person’s own healing cells.

Platelets are cells that are part of normal blood.  Blood consists of cellular elements (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets) and plasma (the liquid component of blood that contains several types of proteins, minerals, and water).  Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) represents the patients own plasma which has been enriched with platelets by specialized equipment.  This high conentration of platelets provides a locally increased concentration of growth factors and other bio-active and signaling proteins that stimulate the healing process, reduce pain, and balance inflammation.

These natural, or biological products that are used to treat musculoskeletal injuries are called ORTHOBIOLOGICS.  PRP is autologous, meaning it comes from your own body (your own blood); therefore, there is no risk of rejection or any type of allergic reaction.  This minimally invasive procedure helps initiate the regenerative healing process by utilizing the growth factors that platelets are known to contain.  The use of PRP is becoming more widespread and has received media coverage because of its use by many professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, PGA, and FIFA.

Platelet Rich Plasma treatment can help heal problems that would otherwise require the use of medications, taken orally or by injection, that have significant side effects.  PRP can also help prevent the need for invasive surgery, and can be an excellent alternative to surgery for many musculoskeletal problems.

How Do PRP and Stem Cells Work?

Platelets contain granules which store and release growth factors and other bioactive substances

After an injury, platelets rush into the area of injury and recruit other cells and growth factors to assist in repairing the injured area and tissue.  These platelets stick to the area of injury and start to release various molecules that the body uses to heal.  These signaling molecules tell the body to start the healing process and cause various cells to migrate into the injured area.  These cells become the types of cells they need to be, and a new rich healing blood supply develops in the area.  All of these things allow the body to heal the injured area in a natural way.

Platelets Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentrated mixture of platelets, growth factors and other bio-active and signaling proteins that are obtained from your own blood.  PRP stimulates and unlocks the body’s natural healing process without using any artificial products.

Platelets contain granules that store various growth factors and cytokines.  These granules are released from the platelets when they are activated.  Growth factors stimulate various tissues to heal.  Cytokines stimulate migrations of various types of cells and stem cells into an area.

Platelets release various substances that stimulate the healing process and reduce pain and inflammation when they become activated

Some of the more important factors that are released by these platelets include:

PDGF - platelet derived growth factor - up regulates other factors

VEDG - vascular edothelial growth factor - stimulates new vessel growth

IGF - insulin like growth factor - stimulates cell growth, differentiation and collagen synthesis

TGF - transforming growth factor - causes differentiation and activation of stem cells

SDGF - stromal derived growth factor - stimulates migration and adhestion of stem cells

The platelets and these factors (and many others) “kick-start” the natural healing process in the area where they are injected.  They also balance the amount of inflammation in the area.  This stimulates the body’s healing process and controls inflammation and pain.

There are two processes that produce opposite affects on the body.  The Anabolic Processes that build up and repair structures, and the Catabolic Processes that tear down or degenerative structures and tissues.  Platelet Rich Plasma stimulates the Anabolic Processes and inhibits the Catabolic Processes.

Platelet Rich Plasma treatment works completely differently than the other “traditional” forms of treatment that are medically available.  Those treatments (such as NSAIDS or corticosteroid injections) unnaturally block processes from occurring and reduce the healing potential.

PRP, on the other hand, does quite the opposite and allows the body to heal itself, naturally.  Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cells will revolutionize how these musculoskeletal problems are treated.

To prepare PRP and Stem Cell Injection Therapy, a small amount of your own blood is drawn from you (like a blood test), and that blood is then separated into its various components, concentrating the platelets and growth factors.  Blood normally contains red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma (the fluid), platelets, and various other proteins.  When Platelet Rich Plasma is prepared, the platelets in your own blood are separated out from the other components of the blood.  The concentrated platelets and growth factors are then injected into the area of injury, jump-starting and strengthening the body’s natural healing process.  The PRP is specifically prepared depending upon which type of problem is being treated.  Appropriate PRP and Stem Cell Injection Therapy is not a “one size fits all” type of a situation.

Since your own blood is used there is no risk of transmitting infection or having an allergic reaction.

“You are using your own body to heal itself.

Now in a pure sense…… how great is that?
